What Is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE is the point at which your current retirement savings, left untouched, will grow through compound returns alone to reach your full retirement number by your target retirement age — without needing to contribute another dollar.
Projected Value = Current Savings × (1 + Return Rate)^Years to Retirement
Why Coast FIRE Is Appealing
Once you hit Coast FIRE, you gain significant flexibility: you can shift to lower-paying but more fulfilling work, reduce your hours, or simply stop saving for retirement (while still covering current living expenses from income) — since your existing investments are already on track to fully fund retirement.
Important Caveats
This calculation assumes a constant average return, which real markets don't provide — actual returns vary year to year. It also doesn't account for inflation eroding your target's purchasing power, or the fact that continuing to earn income (even if you "coast") still typically involves ongoing living expenses that must be covered separately.
