The Devine Formula
Men: Ideal Weight (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches over 5 feet)
Women: Ideal Weight (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches over 5 feet)
Where This Formula Came From
The Devine formula was originally developed in 1974 to help calculate appropriate medication dosages based on body weight, not as a fitness or wellness benchmark. It has since become widely (if somewhat informally) adopted as a general reference for "ideal" body weight.
Important Limitations
This formula considers only height and sex — it doesn't account for body frame size, muscle mass, or individual body composition. A muscular, athletic person will often naturally weigh more than their "ideal weight" by this formula while still being at a healthy body fat percentage. Use this as one general reference point, not a strict target, and consider it alongside other measures like BMI or body fat percentage.
Other Similar Formulas
Other formulas exist (Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) that produce slightly different results using similar height-based logic — none is definitively "more correct" than the others, as ideal weight is inherently an approximation.
