The Volume Formula
Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Depth in inches) ÷ 324
This formula converts your area (length × width, in square feet) and depth (in inches) into cubic yards — the standard unit mulch is sold by. The constant 324 comes from converting cubic feet to cubic yards (÷27) combined with converting inches to feet (÷12).
Recommended Mulch Depth
Most garden beds benefit from 2-3 inches of mulch — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without smothering plant roots. Avoid piling mulch directly against tree trunks or plant stems.
Bags vs. Bulk
A standard 2 cubic foot bag of mulch covers about 1 cubic yard when you buy 13.5 bags. For larger areas, bulk delivery by the cubic yard is usually more economical.
Always Buy a Little Extra
Suppliers commonly recommend ordering 5-10% more than your calculated amount to account for settling, uneven ground, and spillage during placement.
