Even Split vs. Itemized Split

This calculator performs an even split — everyone pays the same amount regardless of what they individually ordered. For groups where people ordered very different amounts, an itemized split (where each person pays for their own items plus a proportional share of tax and tip) may feel fairer, though it requires more detailed calculation per person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should tax and tip be split evenly too, or based on what each person ordered?

This calculator assumes an even split of the entire bill including tax and tip. If your group prefers people to pay proportionally to what they ordered, you'd need an itemized approach instead.

Should I calculate tip on the subtotal or the subtotal plus tax?

Conventions vary — this calculator applies the tip percentage to the subtotal (before tax), which is a common convention, though some people prefer tipping on the post-tax amount.
