The BTU Sizing Formula

BTU ≈ Room Area (sq ft) × 20 × Ceiling Height Factor × Sun Exposure Factor

This uses the widely cited baseline of roughly 20 BTU per square foot for standard 8-foot ceilings in an averagely sunny room, adjusted for higher ceilings (more air volume to condition) and unusual sun exposure.

Why This Is a General Estimate

Precise HVAC sizing (called a "Manual J" calculation by professionals) accounts for insulation quality, window count and orientation, local climate, and number of occupants — factors this simplified calculator doesn't capture. For a whole-home system or a critical installation, a professional load calculation is recommended.
