How Decking Board Count Is Calculated
This calculator determines how many rows of decking boards fit across your deck's length (based on board width including the gap), then calculates the total linear footage needed to cover your deck's width, and divides by your chosen board length to get a board count.
Board Orientation Matters
This calculator assumes boards run across your deck's width — if you're running boards the other direction, simply swap your length and width inputs.
Common Board Specifications
- 5/4x6 decking: Actual width about 5.5 inches including a standard gap
- 2x6 decking: Actual width about 5.5 inches as well, though thicker
- Standard lengths: 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 feet are common stock lengths
Don't Forget the Substructure
This calculator estimates decking boards only — you'll separately need to plan for joists, beams, posts, and footings based on your deck's structural design and local building codes.
