Fence Material Formulas
Posts Needed = (Total Length ÷ Post Spacing) + 1
Panels Needed = Total Length ÷ Panel Width (rounded up)
Why Add 1 to the Post Count
A fence line needs one more post than the number of spacing intervals — think of a fence with 3 equal sections needing 4 posts (one at each end and two in between).
Common Post Spacing
8 feet is a very common spacing for wood privacy fences, matching standard 8-foot panel widths. Chain-link and other fence types may use different standard spacings — check your specific fencing system's requirements.
Corner and Gate Posts
This calculator estimates line posts for a straight run. Corners typically need additional heavier-duty posts, and gates require their own dedicated posts — factor these in separately based on your yard's layout.
