How Gold Value Is Calculated
The value of a piece of gold is determined by three factors: the current market rate for pure (24K) gold, the item's weight, and its purity — since jewellery is rarely made of pure 24K gold (which is too soft for durable jewellery) and is instead alloyed with other metals.
Gold Value = 24K Rate per Gram × Purity Factor × Weight in Grams
Understanding Purity (Karat)
- 24K: 99.9% pure gold — too soft for everyday jewellery, mainly used for coins and bars
- 22K: 91.67% pure — the most common purity for gold jewellery in India
- 18K: 75% pure — more durable, popular for diamond-studded and Western-style jewellery
- 14K: 58.5% pure — very durable, more common internationally than in India
Why This Calculator Doesn't Show a Live Rate
Gold prices fluctuate throughout the trading day based on global commodity markets, currency exchange rates, and local demand — any fixed rate built into a calculator would be outdated within hours. This tool always asks for the current rate, ensuring your calculation is accurate for the very moment you're checking it.
What This Doesn't Include
Jewellers typically charge making charges (a percentage or flat fee for craftsmanship), sometimes a small wastage allowance, and GST (3% in India on gold value, plus GST on making charges) — all added on top of the base gold value this calculator computes.
