The Formula
Needed Score = [Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)] ÷ Final Weight
How This Works
Your overall course grade is a weighted average of your current grade (weighted by everything except the final) and your final exam score (weighted by the final's specific percentage). This formula rearranges that relationship to solve for the one unknown: what score on the final gets you to your target overall grade.
Interpreting the Result
- A result between 0-100%: This is achievable — that's the score you need on the final
- A result above 100%: Your target isn't achievable even with a perfect final score, given your current grade
- A result below 0%: You've already secured your target grade regardless of your final exam performance
Practical Use
This calculation helps you gauge exactly how much final exam preparation you need — if you need a 95%, you know intensive review is essential; if you only need a 40%, you can study with somewhat less pressure (though never zero effort).
