How Negative Marking Works
Many competitive exams deduct marks for incorrect answers to discourage random guessing. The net score formula is universal across any such exam — only the specific point values differ:
Net Score = (Correct Answers × Marks per Correct) − (Incorrect Answers × Marks Deducted per Incorrect)
Why Marking Schemes Vary
Different exams use different ratios between reward and penalty — for example, +1/−0.25 (a 4:1 ratio) versus +3/−1 (a 3:1 ratio) — which changes the "break-even" guessing strategy. A steeper penalty ratio (like 3:1) makes random guessing among 4 options break-even, while a gentler ratio (4:1) makes guessing among 4 options slightly favorable on average, purely mathematically.
Using This to Plan Exam Strategy
Understanding your specific exam's marking scheme can inform smart decisions about when to attempt an uncertain question versus skip it — if you can eliminate enough wrong options to raise your odds of guessing correctly above the scheme's break-even threshold, attempting becomes the mathematically better choice.
