How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the distance you ran and select the unit.
  2. Enter your total time (hours, minutes, seconds).
  3. Click Calculate Pace to see your pace per mile/km and average speed.

The Pace Formula

Pace (minutes per mile/km) = Total Time (minutes) ÷ Distance

Speed = Distance ÷ Total Time (hours)

Why Runners Track Pace Instead of Just Speed

Pace (time per unit distance) is more intuitive for runners than speed (distance per unit time) because it directly answers the practical training question: "how fast do I need to run each mile/km to hit my goal time?" — which is how most training plans and race goals are structured.

Common Uses

Pace Consistency in Races

Many runners aim for "even splits" — maintaining a consistent pace throughout a race — since starting too fast often leads to significant slowdown later, while a well-paced effort throughout tends to produce better overall finish times.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good running pace for beginners?

This varies enormously by individual fitness level, but many beginner runners fall somewhere in the 10-14 minute per mile range for easy-effort running — pace is very personal, so focus on your own progress rather than comparing to others.

How can I use this to plan my race pace?

Enter your goal race distance and target finish time to calculate the exact pace per mile/km you'd need to maintain to hit that goal, which you can then use to pace your training runs and race strategy.
