Common Percentage-to-CGPA Formulas
There is no single universal formula for converting percentage to CGPA — different institutions use different conventions. The two most commonly cited formulas are:
- CBSE-style: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
- VTU/AICTE-style: CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75
Which Formula Should You Use?
Check your institution's official examination handbook or grading policy circular — this determines which formula is officially recognized for your degree. Using the wrong formula can give a misleading equivalent CGPA, especially for high-stakes purposes like further education applications.
Why This Conversion Exists
Many students need to convert between percentage and CGPA when applying to institutions or countries that use a different grading convention than their own university, or when an eligibility criterion is specified in the format their degree doesn't natively use.
