What Percentile Rank Means

A percentile rank tells you what percentage of values in a data set fall at or below a specific value. For example, scoring at the 80th percentile means your score is equal to or higher than 80% of everyone else's scores in that data set.

Percentile = ((Number Below + 0.5 × Number Equal) ÷ Total Count) × 100

Why the "0.5 × Number Equal" Term?

When multiple values in the data set exactly match your target value, this calculator counts them as "half below, half above" — a standard statistical convention that gives a fairer percentile estimate than assuming all tied values rank either fully above or fully below.

It means your value is equal to or higher than 90% of the values in the data set — only about 10% of values rank higher than yours.

Is this the same method used for standardized test percentiles?
