Why VO2 Max Matters
Higher VO2 max generally indicates better cardiovascular fitness and is associated with better athletic endurance performance and, at a population level, better long-term cardiovascular health outcomes.
Limitations of the Cooper Test
This field test is a practical estimate, not a lab-precise measurement — actual VO2 max testing requires specialized equipment measuring oxygen consumption directly during a graded exercise test. Pacing strategy, motivation, running surface, and weather can all affect your 12-minute distance and thus the estimate's accuracy.
