How 7th Pay Commission Salary Is Structured
Under the 7th Central Pay Commission, a central government employee's gross salary comprises several components layered on top of Basic Pay:
Gross Salary = Basic Pay + Dearness Allowance (DA) + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + Transport Allowance (TA) + other applicable allowances
Dearness Allowance (DA)
DA is revised twice a year (January and July) based on the Consumer Price Index, to help offset inflation. It is calculated as a percentage of Basic Pay, and the rate changes with each government notification — always use the latest notified rate for an accurate calculation.
House Rent Allowance (HRA)
HRA rates under 7CPC are classified by city category — X (highest, for the largest cities), Y (mid-tier cities), and Z (other locations) — with X cities receiving the highest percentage of Basic Pay as HRA.
Why This Is an Estimate
Actual gross salary may include additional components not modeled here — such as special allowances specific to certain postings, or category-specific compensations — and is also subject to statutory deductions (NPS/GPF, income tax, etc.) before arriving at net take-home pay.
